| Long Island is one of the most expensive
places in the US to live: that is a fact. It is
also a fact that Long Island has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS in
any suburban area in this nation. With over 3,400 persons living with
AIDS and another 5,600 persons living with HIV - these service cuts are
unconscionable and potentially deadly.
No one can remain silent any longer. No one can or should
take anything for granted: for 15 years plus this region received emergency
federal funding to support low & fixed income families and individuals
living with AIDS. That is now gone, and gone for good, according to HRSA
officials.
Dr. Elizabeth Duke, HRSA's HIV/AIDS Bureau leader, plan to "medicalize"
the Programs offered in Ryan White's name is dangerous, costly, and deadly.
Dr Duke and her cabal in Washington apparently do not care.
Congress is ignoring the issues facing people living with
AIDS on Long Island. Medical care will suffer as a result of the government's
actions taken this week: without decent, safe, and stable housing - there
is no health care! Without warmth - there is no health care! Without access
to fresh, nutritious food - there is no health care!
Thursday’s Child of Long Island will do whatever it takes in order
to continue its 17-year record of successfully providing services to our
neighbors living with HIV/AIDS.
Our agency is willing to change and to take on new challenges,
however we are deeply saddened the result of these cuts may well be that
more people become sick and that more people will become infected as a
result of not having the resources needed to live a decent, safe, clean
life.
Please help! Make a tax-deductible donation to Thursday’s
Child today, then call Dr Duke and tell her that her cuts are wrong!
Dr Duke’s direct office number is: 1-301-443-3316,
& mailing address is: Health Resources & Services Administration,
5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857.
The over one thousand units of direct, humane services provided
by Thursday’s Child each year cannot be provided by the Departments
of Social Services!
Real people will become homeless; real people will go hungry, and be left
for COLD.
Congress Must Be Held Accountable: The CARE has
gone!
Call Senators Clinton & Schumer and tell them that you
are mad as hell and that you will not tolerate this unilateral decision
by the federal government to de-fund Long Island’s priorities!
Tell them to put the “care” back into the Ryan White
CARE Act!
Tell them that Long Island sends millions of dollars in taxes to DC and
demands that DC send back our fare share to provide for vital, essential,
humane services.
Call your Member of Congress and demand services for People With AIDS!
Tell them that they MUST begin legislation TODAY to re-authorize
‘Ryan White’ and to STOP ‘medicalizing’ Ryan White!
Demand restoration of service funding cuts that will hurt your neighbors
& force hundreds to overwhelm the already under-funded Social Service
Departments!
