Purpose & History

To meet the needs, Thursday’s Child has been operating a beautiful colonial house called “Beech House.” It is located in central Suffolk County, willed to Thursday’s Child by a gentleman that passed from AIDS. Since its opening in 1992, it has served over 25 families and individuals in the three apartments, which we have maintained. Over the years, we have been able to subsidize our client's needs through donations, grants, and low rental rates.

Our Services to the Community

From 1995 to 2007, federally funded grants allowed us to provide for the needs of Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Over a thousand persons were assisted annually. Food, shelter, warmth were our priorities served in a dignified manner in order to maintain self-respect.

As the demographics of Long Island are changing, Thursday’s Child is evolving to meet the needs with a 21st century outlook. We are consistently seeking new ways to address the age-old issues of poverty and disease in a forward thinking and effective manner.

Our Safety Net Project is designed for clients who do not qualify for traditional government or social services. An example of this Project is the personal hygiene program, which provides at no cost items that lay the foundation of both medical care and individual dignity.

The Education/Speaker’s Bureau is accepting engagements across Long Island. Our HIV/AIDS education & prevention model is informative and personal. Thursday’s Child offers this service to schools, groups, and organizations; topics are age-appropriate and feature an honest, sensitive approach. Outreach and education are keys to HIV/AIDS prevention.

The Service Advocacy program serves to connect those living with HIV/AIDS with the necessary social and medical support systems available on Long Island, by utilizing the extensive list of contacts we have compiled since 1991.
