| Our Story |
| |
|
In 1989, members of Long Island ACT UP combined forces with Didi Kelley and Thursday’s Child was created. Designed originally as an educational agency, Thursday’s Child shifted its focus to housing in 1992. A good friend of the agency died of AIDS and willed his house to Thursday’s Child to be used as a sanctuary for people with HIV/AIDS. “Beech house” opened in 1992 to serve families and individuals living with the HIV/AIDS virus. To date, Beech House has provided shelter to over 25 families and individuals, providing safe housing at low rental rates.

Beginning in 1995 through February 2007, Thursday’s Child received Ryan White Title 1 grants to assist the public. Thursday’s Child helped people with HIV/AIDS obtain and maintain independent housing by providing emergency housing assistance, utility assistance, and food voucher support. Over the ten years we monitored the grants, we had great successes. We were able to serve over 1000 people annually. However, due to changes in legislation at the federal level in government, emergency financial services are no longer in existence.

Thursday’s Child continues to change as long with the times and with the effect that HIV/AIDS has on our society. Long Island remains one of most expensive places with live in our nation. The cost of housing, heating fuel, electricity, and food continues to rise at an alarming rate and incomes are not following in suit. We at Thursday’s Child remain committed to serving all our neighbors in need.

We will never stay silent on any issue affecting HIV/AIDS – including the civil rights for all Americans.

In honor of our deceased founding members, Louis Fiero, Ted, Oneto, and John Sullivan, we continue to ACT-UP! FIGHT BACK! FIGHT AIDS!
|
